its members inevitably calls for justification. Historically, two major, and conflicting, justifications of punishment have been suggested-the retri-butive theory, and the utilitarian theory. I wish to argue that the latter is essentially correct, and that this has been obscured by an ambiguity of the word ' justification '. Free‐ market fairness might embrace the correct principles of justice, but not the correct principles in the fully Rawlsian sense, as they cannot survive public justification due to deep disagreement about justice, and so cannot stabilize a diverse social order in the right way. The first two principles of economic justice flow from the eternal human search for justice in general, which automatically requires a balance between input and out-take, i.e., “to each according to what he is due.” Social Justice, on the other hand, reflects the human striving for other universal values such as Truth, Love and Beauty. In Lectures on the Doctrine of Justification () Newman attempts to find a via media between justification by faith and by works. His emphasis on sanctification and his suspicion of a merely imputed righteousness is marked by a return to an emphasis on the imparted righteousness of /5(5).
